Amino acids are essential for life and health and have unlimited potential that we have not yet understood. We can enjoy great benefits from amino acids by utilizing them. Ajinomoto Co., Inc. has been applying amino acids in a wide range of fields. The Laboratories aim to increase the value of various amino acids by taking advantage of accumulated experience and knowledge about amino acids, and to introduce this value to the world.
We are striving to discover new materials and applications and to develop new products and processes based on high-level synthetic and bio-technological methods as the world leading amino acid manufacturer.
Search for new materials and applications

Cytological studies
We are searching for new materials that will be useful in daily life, focusing on the “amino acids functions,” “tastes,” and “cosmetics.” We develop flavorings, following an amino acid-based sweetener “aspartame,” discover new cosmetic materials with a whitening effect or an anti-aging effect, and develop new applications of amino acids based on basic research.
Product development research

Dermatological image analysis
We are developing a wide range of products using amino acids including amino acid supplements “Amino Vital®,” cosmetics “Jino®,” other daily-use products and amino acid animal feeds. Recently, a product was launched for improving the Quality of Life of the elderly with the functions of branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) and essential amino acids. We have also developed materials for electronic device which are used in the semiconductor industry.
Process development research

Synthetic/bio-process development
WWe are developing manufacturing methods that employ “chemical synthesis,” “biotechnology,” “isolation/purification,” “chemical engineering” and other technologies. Hybrid process, the integration of “chemical synthesis” and “biotechnology,” is our strength. The new manufacturing methods are used for peptides as pharmaceuticals, pharmaceutical intermediates and sweeteners.
